B1/2 level English class: Japan's independent kids

Updated: Aug 28, 2018

The purpose of the class is to study the video bellow during an individual or a group class.

According to me, this video is interesting for two reasons. First, it allows the students to study a document in English that shows two different accents, the American accent and the Australian accent. But none of these accent are to strong, so the students won't bother to understand what is said in the video. Secondly, the teacher can use the subject of the video to start a debate in English between, and with, the students. But before that, it is necessary to lead them through the proper study of the video.

This study follows the different steps explained in the post about methodology to study a video. The class starts with the teacher showing the hole video to the students without stopping it and without subtitles. This first overview is necessary for the students and will allow them to reach a deeper understanding of the content of the video during the next steps. It's important, even with a group of adults, to reassure the students about the fact that they can't - or they don't have to - understand the hole video the first time they watch it. After having watched the video for the first time, the teacher can ask the students what they already understood. Sharing what they understood will help the group to understand the video at a common pace (and even faster than if they were alone, because they usually get different things from the video).

The second step of the class consists in studying more precisely the video. To that end, the students watch it in different parts and they have to watch each part several times (usually three time each part). At the same time, they answer written questions that allow them to pay attention to details and main pieces of information. This step is the one that lasts longer and it is the most difficult for the students. Therefore, the teacher has to observe how each student is doing and to help them if needed.

The last step is almost like the first one. The students watch, once again, the hole video; but this time with English subtitles. This step allows the students to refine their understanding of the video and to realize how their understanding of this particular document improved during the time of the class.

To finish the class, the teacher can ask the student to discuss the question of children autonomy and what they think of the Japanese way of education concerning this matter. It is also a very good way to reuse the vocabulary learned with the video study, while practicing O.E..
